About This Route

Zu Zeiten der DDR wurde der Elbe-Seitenkanal gebaut, um Elbe und Mittellandkanal zu verbinden und einen etwaigen Panzerangriff zu stoppen. Heute ist die Wasserstraße ein wichtiger Handelsweg, auf dem jährlich über 80.000 Container transportiert werden. Die Schleusengruppe Uelzen ist eines der größten und imposantesten Schleusenbauwerke Deutschlands (Führungstermine: Tel. 05824/3539 oder 05825/ 1843). Überwiegend werden kleine Ortsverbindungswege befahren, zum Teil auch Wald- und Sandboden.
