A collection of 1 cycling route.
Overview
About this collection
A coast‑to‑coast bikepacking traverse across New Zealand’s North Island, linking East Cape to Cape Egmont. It’s roughly 1,100 km with plenty of climbing, stitched together from quiet back roads, gravel, forestry tracks, and shared-use paths. Think Motu Road, the Rere Falls/Rockslide, the Timber Trail through Pureora Forest, bits of the Waikato River Trails, and the Forgotten World Highway on the way to Taranaki.
Surfaces are mostly unpaved, so bring wide tyres and a sense of adventure. You’ll get long, quiet stretches, big views, swing bridges, and a few chunky pinches that keep you honest. Services can be spaced out, so plan food and water—some legs feel pretty remote by NZ standards.
Ride it either direction; both work. Summer (Jan–Mar) is the sweet spot, but weather can swing from bluebird to soggy fast. Expect a mix of camping, huts/lodges, and small-town stops. It’s set up as a self-supported brevet style route—no drama, just steady days, good manners, and a smile for the locals.
If you’re into big landscapes, gravel variety, and a proper Aotearoa experience, this one’s a gem.
