Smiltene – Valmiera

Point-to-point ride across Vidzeme from Smiltene to Valmiera on the Gauja. About 39 km with gentle rolling hills (roughly 150 m up, 190 m down). Expect long stretches on main roads, some quieter backroads, and a couple of short path sections. Surfaces are mixed—bits of asphalt, plenty of gravel, and some unknown patches—so a gravel or touring bike is a safe bet.

Scenery is classic northern Latvia: pine forests, farmland, and small towns. Strenči is a handy midway stop for water or snacks. Roll into Valmiera for river views, cafes, and an easy link toward Gauja National Park if you want to keep going.

Heads-up: parts of the route can be traffic-heavy, so ride with lights and stay visible. After rain, gravel can get soft. Mostly flat-ish and straightforward to navigate, good for most riders who are comfortable sharing the road.
