Overview
About this collection
A cross-border ride linking Pirmasens (DE) and Bitche (FR) through the Palatinate Forest and the Vosges du Nord—part of a shared UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. It’s roughly 47 km with about 1,050 m of climbing, so expect rolling hills, short punchy ramps, and fun forest descents.
The route mixes dedicated cycleways and quiet roads with a few forest tracks. It’s mostly paved, with brief stretches of gravel, wood bridges, and the odd cobble. There’s a tiny bit of busier road, but it’s short. Ideal for touring or gravel bikes; confident road riders will be fine with a little care on the unpaved bits.
Scenery hits all the regional highlights: shady pine and sandstone landscapes, sleepy villages, and a grand finale at Bitche’s citadel. Wayfinding is generally good on local bike signs, but a GPS helps in the woods.
Tips:
- Rideable in either direction; the climbing adds up more than you’d think.
- Carry ID for the border and a snack—services can be spaced out.
- Watch for wet leaves and moss on shaded forest sections.
Great as a solid half-day to full-day outing with time for bakery stops and photo breaks.
