F23: Brussels–Vilvoorde–Boom

The F23 is a straight, mostly flat cycle highway linking Brussels with Vilvoorde and Boom. It largely follows the Brussels–Scheldt Canal, so expect long car‑free stretches with water views, locks, and a bit of industrial heritage. Ideal for fast commutes and easy weekend spins.

Riding feel: mostly dedicated cycleway with a few short on‑road sections and path detours through town. Surfaces vary—concrete and asphalt in many places, some paving stones, and the odd unpaved bit—so wider tires can be handy but not essential.

Why ride it: quick north–south access in and out of Brussels, simple navigation (just keep the canal nearby), and plenty of spots to pause by the water. Vilvoorde brings a revived canal zone vibe; Boom sits by the Rupel and green spaces like De Schorre.

Good to know: it can be breezy along the canal, and there are occasional road crossings and bridge works—keep an eye out. Train connections at Brussels, Vilvoorde, and Boom make one‑way rides easy.
