Val Chiavenna Cycle Route (Colico–Promontogno)
A cycling tour with 2 stages, starting in Colico, Lombardy, Italy.
Overview
About this tour
A classic cross‑border valley ride from Lake Como to Switzerland. Start in Colico and follow the Mera River up Val Chiavenna to Promontogno in the Bregaglia, Grisons. It’s mostly on dedicated cycleways and quiet roads, with a few short links on busier streets plus some gravel and cobbled sections—wider tires help.
Expect big alpine views, chestnut woods, and stone villages. Roll through Chiavenna’s historic center, swing by the Acquafraggia waterfalls near Piuro, and look out for traditional “crotti” tucked into the rock. The gradient feels steady rather than sharp, so it’s friendly for touring bikes and e‑bikes; ride it uphill from the lake for the classic approach, or flip it for an easier net‑downhill back to Como.
Surfaces are mostly paved, but you’ll hit bits of gravel, paving stones, and the odd wooden or metal bridge. Watch for mixed‑use sections and town traffic. Best from spring to autumn; bring lights for tunnels and take it easy on the cobbles if wet.
