Cycling day trip from Algés to Lisbon

This ride takes you from the riverside suburb of Algés to the heart of Lisbon, winding 22 km east along mostly quiet roads and dedicated cycleways. Starting in Algés, known for its waterfront parks and proximity to the iconic Belém district, you’ll follow the River Tagus, catching lovely views of Lisbon’s famous bridges and historic port areas.

The route is predominantly paved and asphalt (great for city bikes!), with only tiny sections of gravel and cobblestone to keep things interesting. Expect some rolling terrain—the biggest climbs top out at around 170 meters, so be ready for a bit of a workout, but the ascents are manageable even for casual riders.

As you pedal closer to Lisbon, you’ll notice the scenery transform from peaceful riverside stretches to vibrant city neighborhoods. Lisbon awaits with its grand squares, pastel buildings, and famous hills—not to mention plenty of cafés for a post-ride espresso! All in all, it’s a scenic urban ride with a great mix of quiet roads and cycle paths, perfect for exploring the western edge of Portugal’s capital.
