Quick ride by bicycle from Edinburgh to Musselburgh

This scenic cycle takes you from the heart of Edinburgh to the historic seaside town of Musselburgh, covering just under 18 km and mostly smooth sailing on dedicated cycleways and quiet roads (so you can enjoy the ride without dodging too much traffic!). Starting in Edinburgh, you get all the buzz of Scotland’s capital—think grand old buildings, hidden closes, and the silhouette of Arthur’s Seat in the distance.

Heading out, you’ll mostly follow well-maintained paths through the city’s green corridors, gradually descending towards the coast with the Firth of Forth on your left. The ascent is mild, so it’s beginner-friendly—and the descent into Musselburgh is a nice reward.

Musselburgh, known as “The Honest Toun,” greets you with riverside views and a charming promenade. It’s famous for its racecourse, golf links (the oldest continuously played in the world!), and classic fish and chips by the harbour. A great route if you want a blend of urban adventure and a taste of the sea—plus, there’s plenty to explore at both ends!
