By bicycle from Villach to Wernberg

This relaxed cycling route takes you from the lively town of Villach to the peaceful village of Wernberg—a nice little ride of just under 10 kilometers. Villach, nestled on the banks of the Drau River, is known for its historic old town, cafés, and beautiful mountain views. You’ll set off from here, rolling along mostly quiet roads with stretches of dedicated cycleway, making for an enjoyable and low-stress ride.

You’ll gain a modest ascent of around 93 meters, so there are a few gentle climbs—just enough to keep things interesting, but nothing too strenuous. The route is mostly paved, with plenty of smooth asphalt and little traffic, perfect for taking in the Carinthian countryside.

Arriving in Wernberg, you’ll find a more rural vibe, with traditional Austrian homes and scenic landscapes. Fun fact: Wernberg is known for its historic castle, Burg Wernberg, which dates back to the 12th century and now operates as a monastery and guesthouse.
