Cycling day trip from Melk to Weinzierl bei Krems

This scenic ride starts in the charming town of Melk, famous for its stunning baroque abbey perched above the Danube River. You’ll cover just over 40 km, tracing peaceful cycle paths and quiet country roads—perfect for soaking up the gorgeous Lower Austrian scenery without too much traffic.

The route winds gently through rolling hills and idyllic villages, gaining and dropping about 260 meters in elevation overall—enough for a bit of a workout, but nothing too dramatic. The surfaces are almost all smooth asphalt or paved paths, so you can relax and enjoy the ride. Along the way you’ll skirt the edge of the Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site renowned for its vineyards and picturesque landscapes.

You’ll finish your journey at Weinzierl bei Krems, a sleepy spot just outside of Krems, which is another treasure trove of history and wine culture. All in all, it’s a beautiful jaunt through some of Austria’s best countryside—bring your camera and maybe plan a wine tasting at the end!
