Cycling day trip from Melk to Linz

This scenic cycling route takes you from the charming riverside town of Melk to Austria’s third-largest city, Linz. Starting in Melk, you’ll be greeted by the stunning Melk Abbey, a UNESCO World Heritage Site perched high above the Danube—and a real treat for history buffs! The ride mostly follows a mix of smooth cycleways and quiet country roads, with only gentle hills but a couple of longer climbs that spice things up (the route tops out at 600 meters).

You’ll pedal alongside the Danube for much of the way, passing through an ever-changing landscape of vineyards, forests, and quaint villages. Most of the ride is on good asphalt, but be ready for short sections of missing or rougher pavement, especially in lesser traveled rural stretches.

Linz awaits you at the finish line, a lively city known for its arts scene and riverside cafes. And after 135 kilometers (and almost 1800 meters up!), you’ll have earned a slice of the city’s famous Linzer torte.
