Cycling day trip from Liège to Maastricht

This scenic ride takes you from the lively city of Liège in Belgium up to the vibrant Dutch town of Maastricht—about 32 km of enjoyable cycling through rolling countryside, riverside paths, and quiet roads.

Starting out in Liège, known as “La Cité Ardente” (The Fiery City), you’ll quickly leave behind its industrial vibe and riverside charm as you pedal northeast. The route is pretty gentle, with just over 130 meters of climbing—enough to get your legs moving, but nothing too tough.

Most of the ride is on comfortable paved surfaces and dedicated cycleways, weaving alongside the Meuse river and through peaceful villages. There’s barely any busy road to worry about, so you can just enjoy the fields, old stone farmhouses, and Dutch wind in your hair.

Crossing the border into the Netherlands, you’ll arrive in Maastricht—a city famous for its picturesque old town, lively squares, and gorgeous churches. Park your bike at Vrijthof Square and treat yourself to a well-deserved coffee or Limburgse vlaai (local fruit tart). It’s a classic cross-border ride with a dash of both Belgian and Dutch culture!
