Cycling day trip from Zittau to Zgorzelec

This route takes you from Zittau, a charming Saxon town where Germany, Poland, and the Czech Republic meet, up to Zgorzelec on the Polish side of the Neisse River. Covering just over 42 kilometers, it’s a pleasant ride mostly on paved surfaces (so your road bike will feel at home!). Almost half the route follows dedicated cycleways, with plenty of stretches on quiet roads — perfect for a relaxed outing.

You’ll roll through gentle hills (with under 300 meters of ascent/descent overall), passing through scenic countryside and maybe stopping in quaint villages for snacks or a coffee. The border region is rich in history, and riding into Zgorzelec you’ll notice the distinct shift in architecture; Zgorzelec and Görlitz were actually one city until WWII split them along the river, making for a fascinating finish to your ride.

This isn’t a high-adrenaline route, but it’s a great way to experience the mellow side of the region, enjoy fresh air, and easily cross from Germany into Poland by bike. Don’t forget to explore Zgorzelec’s riverside once you arrive!
