Cycling day trip from Wilhelmshaven to Varel

This is a lovely cycling route taking you from Wilhelmshaven, a bustling port city on the North Sea coast, down to the charming town of Varel, the gateway to the Friesland region. You’ll pedal just over 26 km, almost totally flat, making this a mellow ride ideal for most cyclists.

You start off in Wilhelmshaven, famous for its maritime history and its unique position as Germany’s only deep-water port. Ride out of town and soon you'll be surrounded by open fields and dykes typical for Lower Saxony. Most of your journey is on well-paved surfaces, so you can enjoy the scenery without worrying about bumpy roads. The route is mostly along cycle paths and quiet side roads—perfect if you’re looking to escape traffic.

As you roll into Varel, you’ll notice it’s a cozy little spot, known for its local markets and the beautiful Vareler Hafen (harbor) on the Jade Bay. Take a break at a café or walk along the water before heading back or onward. It’s a relaxing coastal ride with North Sea breezes and peaceful rural views—perfect for a day out!
