Cycling day trip from Mittenwald to Thaur

This scenic cycling route takes you from Mittenwald, a charming Bavarian alpine village famous for its violin-making tradition and colorful frescoed houses, all the way to the Tyrolean village of Thaur, just outside Innsbruck. The ride is about 78 km, featuring a good mix of paved and gravel surfaces, and rolling through the dramatic landscapes of the Karwendel mountains.

You’ll have some climbing to do (about 940 meters up!), but you’re rewarded with over 1,100 meters of descent as you make your way south into Austria. Roughly a third of your journey follows scenic tracks—perfect for soaking in the mountain air—and smooth cycle paths. Don’t be surprised if you spot grazing cows, rushing streams, and forests along the way.

When you finish in Thaur, you’re just a stone’s throw from Innsbruck, but the village itself is worth a look—known for its centuries-old churches and beautiful Alps views. A perfect ride for fans of mountain panoramas and cross-border cycling!
