Cycling day trip from Leer to Bunde

A breezy, flat 21 km spin from Leer to Bunde through classic Ostfriesland scenery. Roll out from Leer’s pretty old town and harbor—this “Gateway to East Frisia” is known for its brick gabled houses and riverside vibe—then ease onto dike-top cycle paths and quiet farm lanes across the Rheiderland. It’s mostly smooth going (largely asphalt with a few paving-stone stretches), and virtually flat—the highest point is only about 7 m—so the only “climb” might be a headwind. Expect wide views, canals, and the occasional sheep on the dike.

You’ll finish in Bunde, right by the Dutch border, a laid-back Rheiderland town with a compact center and a long dike-building history tied to the Dollart bay. Grab a coffee on the Marktplatz or detour toward the border if you’ve got extra legs.
