Cycling day trip from Hinterzarten to Schluchsee

This ride takes you from Hinterzarten, a charming Black Forest village famed for its winter sports and lush meadows, down to the sparkling waters of Schluchsee, the region’s largest lake. It’s a beautiful 22 km route, mixing paved village roads, farm tracks, and forest paths—with a good bit of everything thrown in: a decent climb, plenty of gentle descents, and some classic Black Forest scenery.

You’ll start at a breezy 900 meters and wind your way upwards to just over 1060 meters, rolling through fragrant pine forests and quiet glades. About a third of the ride is unpaved, so slightly chunkier tires are a plus, especially on those gravel and loose sections. Don’t forget to pause for those sweeping valley views!

Arriving at Schluchsee, you can reward yourself with a lakeside rest or dip. The lake is actually a dam, but since the 1930s, it’s been a hotspot for swimming, sailing, and laid-back vibes. Grab a pastry or a beer, and enjoy the postcard-perfect finish before heading back or hopping on a train—the perfect Black Forest day out.
