Cycling day trip from Füssen to Biberwier

Roll out from Füssen’s pastel old town on the Lech, with Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau just up the hill, and head south toward Austria. The route threads mostly quiet roads and farm tracks, crossing the border near Pinswang and cruising through the Reutte area. It’s about 43 km with roughly 930 m of climbing, so expect a steady workout rather than a sprint. Surfaces are largely paved, but there’s a fair bit of gravel and unpaved track sprinkled in—great for a touring or gravel bike.

After Reutte, follow the old Via Claudia Augusta corridor through the Zwischentoren valley toward Lermoos, with big views of the Zugspitze and the Mieminger chain. A lakeside detour to Heiterwanger See/Plansee is a beauty if you’ve got time. You’ll top out around 1,130 m before rolling into Biberwier, an old mining village at the foot of the Fernpass and part of the Tiroler Zugspitz Arena—keep an eye out for the Loisach river springs nearby.

Tip: carry ID for the border and pack a light layer; mountain weather can change quickly.
