Cycling day trip from Füssen to Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Roll out from Füssen, Bavaria’s Romantic Road finale and gateway to Neuschwanstein, and ease along the Lech River before turning east through farmland and little Pfaffenwinkel villages. Expect a smooth, rolling day rather than big passes: about 106 km with roughly 960 m of climbing, topping out around 825 m. The route mixes mostly quiet roads and farm tracks with a few gravel stretches, so 32–35 mm tires are perfect.

Aim for coffee in a walled old town like Schongau, then swing toward the Loisach valley. Near Murnau you can skirt the Murnauer Moos nature reserve with wide-open views and the Alps getting closer by the kilometer. The final run follows the Loisach toward Garmisch-Partenkirchen, with the Zugspitze massif suddenly filling the horizon.

Finish in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, famed for Germany’s highest peak (Zugspitze) and its Olympic ski jump. Grab a beer in the cobbled center and watch paragliders ride the evening thermals. Tip: there are some unpaved bits (roughly 10–15%), so pack a spare tube and enjoy the quieter backroads.
