Quick ride by bicycle from Datteln to Waltrop

Roll out from Datteln, home to the world’s largest canal junction where the Dortmund–Ems, Wesel–Datteln, and Datteln–Hamm canals meet. The route to Waltrop is about 11 km and mostly flat, weaving along quiet roads and towpaths through fields and waterside stretches. Expect a mix of surfaces: plenty of smooth asphalt, but also gravel and some unpaved bits—ideal for a hybrid or gravel bike. After rain, a few sections can be soft.

You’ll cruise past calm canal scenes with minimal traffic; watch for farm vehicles on the back roads. At an easy pace, plan around 40–60 minutes in the saddle.

Roll into Waltrop with a great excuse to stop at the LWL Industrial Museum: the historic Henrichenburg ship lift sits right by the canal. Waltrop also has the former Zeche Waltrop colliery site—now a creative hub—if you fancy a quick wander or coffee before heading back.
