Set off from the lively streets of Bratislava, Slovakia’s capital, and pedal your way across the border to iconic Vienna, Austria! This ride is a classic favorite among cycling enthusiasts—about 74 km mostly along the Danube River, making it a scenic and relatively gentle journey. You’ll enjoy smooth cycling with mostly asphalt or paved surfaces and a dedicated cycleway for over half the route, so it’s beginner-friendly too.

The path weaves through charming Slovak and Austrian countryside, dotted with little villages and lush riverbanks, and you’ll catch some lovely views of the river and, if you’re lucky, some local wildlife. Expect a mild ascent of around 450 meters—nothing too challenging—and lots of opportunities to pause for a coffee or pastry in the towns along the way.

You’ll roll into Vienna, a city packed with imperial history, music, and grand coffeehouses. Bratislava and Vienna are two of the world’s closest capitals, making this ride a unique way to cross from Slovakia to Austria in just a few hours—passport, camera, and a sense of adventure all recommended!

Iron Curtain Greenway 001

Cycling route in Bratislava, Bratislava Region, Slovakia

Bratislava to Vienna, following in part, the attractive and historically interesting 'Iron Curtain Greenway' bike route. Can go either way and do the return trip cheaply on the bike-friendly train. All very flat, first half really interesting and occasionally marshy. Second half to Vienna, is largely open fields - boring unless you're training. Interesting once more, from Gross Enzersdorf through the Donau Auen nature reserve, however. Foot ferry at Angern an der March - check it's running!
