Cycling day trip from Banská Bystrica to Ružomberok

This ride takes you from the historic heart of Banská Bystrica up to the lively town of Ružomberok, winding through the beautiful Slovak mountains over about 64 km. Starting in Banská Bystrica—a city known for its gorgeous main square and mining history—you’ll quickly find yourself leaving the city’s bustle and pedaling into forested hills and peaceful tracks.

The route is quite a challenge, with a hefty 2,500+ meters of climbing and a similar amount of descent, so expect some serious ups and downs. You’ll climb as high as 1,129 meters, with long stretches on unpaved or gravel sections, perfect for adventure and gravel bikes but doable for fit riders on sturdy hybrids as well.

Much of the way is on forest tracks and quiet country roads, so you’ll get plenty of fresh air and scenic views—maybe even spot some wildlife. The journey ends in Ružomberok, a friendly town nestled by the Váh river and surrounded by mountains, great for relaxing or exploring the historic center before heading home. Don’t forget snacks and layers—the Slovak hills can surprise you!
