Cycling day trip from Tirano to Bormio

Set off from the charming town of Tirano, right on the Italian-Swiss border and well known as the starting point of the famous Bernina Express train. This ride to Bormio is one for the climbing lovers—expect a good bit of uphill, with more than 1,000 meters of ascent as you gain altitude towards the mountains.

The route is almost 40 km long, and you’ll mostly stick to smooth asphalt and designated cycleways (so relax, it’s not all heavy traffic!). Along the way, you’ll weave through lush Valtellina countryside, pass apple orchards and vineyards, and enjoy views of the looming Alps ahead. There are short stretches of gravel for a change of pace, but nothing a road bike can’t handle.
