Cycling day trip from Sežana to Trieste

This ride takes you from Sežana, a charming Slovenian town right on the border, into Trieste, the Italian port city famed for its coffee culture, grand squares, and scenic seaside. Covering just over 20 kilometers, this route lets you coast downhill for much of the journey—there’s nearly 500 meters of descent, making it fast and fun.

You’ll start at around 370 meters above sea level in Sežana, known for its karst landscapes and proximity to Lipica, home of the famous Lipizzaner horses. The route is mostly along quiet roads and paved sections (though expect a bit of gravel here and there), zigzagging through picturesque countryside as you head toward the blue of the Adriatic.

Crossing the border is usually a breeze by bike—just keep your ID handy. Soon, you’ll sweep into Trieste, where you can reward yourself with fresh Italian gelato and take in the view from Piazza Unità d'Italia. It’s a perfect ride if you want a taste of both Slovenia and Italy in less than a couple of hours on the saddle!
