Cycling day trip from Bogotá to La Calera

Ready for a breath of fresh Andean air and a solid challenge? This ride kicks off in Bogotá, Colombia’s vibrant high-altitude capital (2,640m), famous for its art, culture, and cycling scene. You’ll wind your way northeast toward La Calera, a smaller town perched even higher in the mountains and a beloved weekend escape for Bogotanos.

It’s a climb-heavy 32 km ride, with over 700 meters of ascent, so get ready to feel those legs work. Much of your route follows the fabled Bogotá–La Calera climb—an iconic stretch for locals—complete with long stretches on cycleway and some patches of unpaved adventure. You’ll take in sweeping views of Bogotá falling away behind you as the road meanders up through cloud forests and rolling hills. Expect a mix of surfaces, mostly paved but with the odd rough patch to keep things interesting.

Arriving in La Calera (3,050m!) you can reward yourself with hot chocolate and cheese—yes, it’s a thing here. A true Colombian classic!
