By bicycle from Thorold to St. Catharines

This cycling route takes you from the historic canal city of Thorold up to the bustling heart of St. Catharines, covering just over 13 km of mostly smooth, asphalt roads. Thorold is known for its well-preserved downtown and, of course, the impressive locks of the Welland Canal—so you might catch some great views of ships “climbing the mountain.”

The ride is fairly gentle, with a net descent (always a bonus!) and only a small ascent early on. Much of the journey is along quiet roads and dedicated cycleways, making for a relaxed, enjoyable spin. About 93% of the route is paved, so you won’t have to worry about any rough patches—just a touch of gravel here and there.

As you roll into St. Catharines, known as “The Garden City,” you’ll notice its tree-lined streets and vibrant local scene. With minimal time spent on busy roads, this route is great for both newer cyclists or anyone looking for a safe, leisurely ride between these scenic Niagara Region communities.
