By bicycle from Barnsbury to Hackney

Set off from leafy Barnsbury, one of Islington’s prettiest neighborhoods, full of classic Georgian terraces and tucked-away garden squares. This relaxed ride to Hackney is a breeze—just under 8km and mostly flat, with a gentle downhill bias and only the tiniest of climbs (you’ll barely notice them between the coffee stops and people-watching).

You’ll roll east through some of North London’s more chilled-out streets, sticking mostly to quiet backroads (about 70% of your route), including stretches of well-kept cycleways. That means fewer cars, more time for soaking up the sights, and maybe slowing down to spot a hidden mural or pick up a pastry.

Arriving in Hackney, you’re right at the heart of one of London’s most creative neighborhoods, known for its buzzing markets, indie cafes, and sprawling green spaces. The roads are nearly all smooth asphalt, so this is a very beginner-friendly pedal, making it a favorite commute or weekend route. Bring a camera, and maybe plan your end stop at Broadway Market or London Fields for a picnic!
