Cycling day trip from Plovdiv to Perushtitsa

Get ready for a scenic ride! This route starts in Plovdiv, Bulgaria’s vibrant second city, famous for its ancient Roman theatre and charming Old Town. You’ll head southwest towards the foothills of the Rhodope Mountains, with your destination set for Perushtitsa—a small historic town known for its role in Bulgaria’s struggle for liberation.

The ride is about 33 km and mostly sticks to quiet roads and cycleways, so you can take in the views without much traffic. Expect gentle climbing (about 247 meters total ascent), especially as you get closer to Perushtitsa, where you’ll spot the green hills rolling in the distance.

While 33% of the route is paved, a good chunk of the route (especially in the midsection) rolls over mixed or unpaved surfaces, so a gravel or trekking bike would be ideal. Keep an eye out for vineyards and fields along the way—this region is known for its local wine.
