A very beautiful, scenic ride (after one gets below Half Moon Bay) -- and by going south, one avoids headwinds (during the summer). Monterey's 17-Mile Drive is worth the entire trip. The bike lane on CA-1 leaves much to be desired, but during our trip the drivers were generally courteous, so we experienced no difficulties or "close calls". Services along Big Sur can be sparce at points, and one needs to check with CALTRANS to ensure that Hwy 1 has no closures due to slides or other mishaps. (The Devil's Slide area north of Half Moon Bay is notorious for mudslides -- and the occasional car flying over the guardrails). Overall, one of the best shorter rides we have been on. We took the train from SLO back up to the Bay Area. (Checking in the bikes was fairly easy, although they did require some dismantling of pedals and handlebars). The train trip back takes about a day.
