About This Route

De naam Almelo betekent: op zandgrond gelegen bos bij de Aa. Op de kruising van de Almelose Aa en een landweg staat, waarschijnlijk al vanaf de 12e eeuw, Huis Almelo. Het is al eeuwenlang in handen van de familie Van Rechteren Limpurg. Tijdens de Industriele Revolutie groeiden vele huisweverijen uit tot textielfabrieken. Dankzij de goede ligging langs water en spoor leidde dit tot rijkdom, wat in de stad nog terug te zien is in landhuizen en villa's. In Almelo is ook de grootste bankroof uit de Nederlandse geschiedenis gepleegd. In 1944 overvielen verzetsmensen de Nederlandsche Bank en namen 46,1 miljoen gulden mee.
