Starting from Carcassonne
at around 100 M, we climbed into the Montagne Noire through some beautiful
villages, several of which could be good places to stay on future trips. Villeneuve, in particular, was nice, as
well as Cabrespine and Labastide. Lastours also looked great, and Trèbes as well. Trèbes had nice “port” facilities for
the Canal du Midi that passes through the area.
The two named gorges along the
route, Gorges de la Chamoux and Gorges de l’Arnette were a pleasure, but
definitely not spectacular. The
nicest section along a river was D101 along the Orbiel River.
When we arrived
at the Pic-de-Nore at 1211 M, not only did we feel like we were on top of the
world, but that the wind would blow us off it. On the way up, we passed up the opportunity of a short 16%
climb that went to some “gouffre”. I checked on the internet and
found a Wikipedia entry showing that the word means an abyss or chasm.
Overall,
a great ride on outstanding roads. While we’ve been in the Aude Department for
a number of days now, at the northern part of our ride today, we entered the
Tarn Department for a bit before returning to Aude.
Background:
My wife and I have been doing self-supported tours in Western Europe (a majority in France) since 1993. This series of rides covers our 2005 2 month route through parts of France. Our beginning and ending point is near Chaduri (south of Angoulême) where our friends have a farm with Gites and Chambres d'Hotes.
We rode our Dawes touring bicycles purchased in 1993 heavily loaded with 700Cx32 tires. All of our riding was on paved roads, mostly with very little traffic.
