Grenzenloses Grabfeld

For nearly 40 years, the inner-German border separated the far northern part of Bavaria from the southernmost part of Thuringia, dividing Germany into the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the German Democratic Republic (GDR). At the same time, it also divided the entire world into a capitalist West and a socialist East. What is often forgotten about this international significance is that for the lives and lifestyles of those who lived in close proximity to this border, the cut was often much more drastic. Overnight, a border ran through backyards and separated families and friends. Tour The ride starts in the marketplace of the spa town of Bad Königshofen and first leads through the idyllic fields of Grabfeld to the small Alsleben. Directly past a former border crossing, the route heads south up to Zimmerau and the Bavarian Tower (definitely climb up and enjoy the view!). Then comes what was previously not possible: a leisurely bike ride across the border! In Thuringia, the tour passes through the picturesque towns of Ried and Gompertshausen, past the former wasteland of Leitenhausen, and finally even directly along a portion of the old column path. But beware: here the surface is partly very bumpy and technically demanding. Better to dismount and push before something happens! Along the Green Belt, it finally leads back across the border between Trappstadt and Schlechtsart. Through Trappstadt, Eyershausen and Ipthausen, it is a relaxed ride back to Bad Königshofen, with idyllic scenery. A tour for everyone who wants to experience the consequences the Wall had on the region, the people, and the nature of Grabfeld. A cycling experience full of exciting places along and around the former border, which, in this form, would not have even been possible a little more than 30 years ago. Tips and further information Start We recommend the marketplace of Bad Königshofen as a starting point. Since it is a circular route, it can be joined anywhere along the path. Refreshments A stop along the way is possible in Alsleben, at the Berggasthof am Bayernturm, and in Rieth. Back in Bad Königshofen, there is again a selection of various dining establishments.
