About This Route

Determined to keep off State Highway as far as possible on my trip to Timaru (this is first leg). Great flat ride but several roads unsealed so unsuitable for road bike. Low traffic - sometimes don't see a car for half an hour - just great! One small stretch through forest track and you need to ford the Manawatu River (only do these if dry - it was so dry when I did it there was no water in the river :). Rakaia River bridge is very long with no room for bikes - but the drivers were understanding!

If you prefer the shorter State Highway 1, from what I saw the road shoulders were wide and grass berms clean cut. Quite safe I think, and compared with NI, little traffic (but still too much for me!).
