About This Route

Route follows the A961 from St Margaret's Hope across the Churchill barriers to the islands of Burray, Glims Holm and Lamb Holm (stop to visit the WWII Italian chapel. Once on the mainland turn left and continue on the A961 into Kirkwall. Road is a two lane highway with relatively light traffic. of several historic sitesin Kirkwall we visited St Magnus cathedral. WIth half a day left, but accommodation booked in Kirkwall we then made an afternoon trip to Maes Howe (warning: guided tour access only bookings necessary).

Highlights: lush green countryside, Churchill barriers, Italian chapel, St Magnus cathedral, Maes Howe.
