About This Route

Ab Schmittheim geht es über die Höhen der Nordeifel und später bergab  ins Tal der Olef, einem gut 20 km langen Flüsschen, das in Gemünd in  die Urft mündet. Seit dem Mittelalter zählte das Oleftal zu den  bedeutendsten Standorten der deutschen Eisenindustrie;  die lokalen Eisenerzvorkommen wurden in den Eifeltälern verarbeitet,  während die Eisenhütten und Hammerwerke entlang der Olef die dafür  nötige Energie lieferten.
