This incorporates two longish climbs, one that starts at the bottom of Pontyates and heads up the Meincau with its false summit. The second starts at the old Spudder's Bridge, goes through Trimsaran to Pen Y Mynydd where you turn off onto the mountain road and its views. These are two testing climbs but not overly difficult. The route back involves a narrow down hill country road to meet the main road at the bottom. A short cycle takes you near the old Butcher's Arms pub where you can manouver onto the cycle track on the other side of the littly hump backed bridge before the pub. You could decide to go a bit further on and join the cycle path on the right just after passing the turn off to Pembrey Country Park and its cycling facilities. or ignore the narrow down hill road turn off and head straight to Pembrey and the impressive mountain views but a steep descent awaits you as you get close to the Pembrey road junction at the bottom. Turn right at this junction and then left and join the cycle path on the other side of a little hump back bridge.
