This is the best part of the TransAlpina. It is killer climbing but easier from north to south than from south to north. The switchback turns are extremely sharp and steep approaching from the south, especially the inside of the turn making keeping your balance a challenge. There are three false suā€¦

This is the famous high pass that cyclists are challenged to accomplish. It is a daunting route and truly amazing. There is lodging Ā in Arefu, Cetatea Poenari, Ā and at the south end of Balea Lake just before the switchback ascent to the top of the pass. Ā There are tourist stands and food at the topā€¦

Rode this route in July 2018: Roads 691, 682,Ā  Ā Road 691 between Timisoara and Freeway A1 is 10 miles of bumper to bumper traffic with big trucks, fast cars, no shoulder, two lane road in rough condition. We were able to get off this busy section a couple of times on short side roads, but all in alā€¦

This is an all paved route that visits some of the highlights of Transylvania. It is two lane roads with no shoulder. Traffic is minimal most of the way.
