Deutschlandtour Flensburg - Bodensee

A cycling tour with 9 stages, starting in Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

Overview

About this tour

Germany from north to south. You start at the Danish border in Flensburg and arrive a week later at Lake Constance in Lindau. In between are landscapes as diverse and unique as can be: the High North between the Baltic and North Seas, the metropolis of Hamburg, the endless expanses of Lower Saxony, the lonely side of Germany in the low mountain ranges like the Harz, Rhön and Swabian Alb, and finally the postcard idyll of the Allgäu Alps.

Cycling route in Prinzenmoor, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany

The longest stage with 194 km and the first mountain classification of our tour is the Itzespitze at kilometer 42, if you can even call it that for an 83 m high hill. Then we slowly but surely head towards the Elbe; the closer we get to the Hamburg metropolitan area, the more traffic tends to incre…

Cycling route in SĂĽdergellersen, Lower Saxony, Germany

Today's stage is the last flat stage before we head into the Harz Mountains tomorrow. Through the Lüneburg Heath, passing Uelzen, we'll soon be able to pick up speed. Mostly on lonely country roads, we take the direct route towards the automotive capital, Wolfsburg. Passing the giant VW plant, we n…

Cycling route in Königslutter am Elm, Lower Saxony, Germany

Today marks the true start, the first real mountains await. We leave Bornum and head south, generally following the Okertal valley towards Harz. The first 55 km to Oker, however, are still largely flat, so we can again roll in comfortably today. We pass the picturesque Oker Dam and then choose the …

Cycling route in Bad Sooden-Allendorf, Hesse, Germany

Once again, a long stage awaits, with the Hohen Meißner as another highlight of our crossing of Germany. After a warm-up, we tackle the Meißner, considered one of the toughest climbs in Hesse. E6 Rein in die Rhön

Cycling route in Fulda, Hesse, Germany

The sixth part of the stage is similar to the ride through the Harz the previous day and one should never make the mistake of underestimating the Rhön. We leave Fulda, and after a short warm-up climb to Giebelrain, we are already in the extended ascent to the Wasserkuppe, the highest mountain of th…

The seventh stage is characterized by the deeply cut river valleys of the Hohenlohe plain as well as the wooded hills of the Swabian-Franconian Forest, along with several short but sometimes steep climbs. E8 Episch entlang des Albtrauf

Cycling route in Winnenden, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany

Even the penultimate section is quite long again at 171 km. The Swabian Alb is the setting for an epic queen stage. You could also ride quite relaxed over the Alb plateau, but instead we follow the steep edge of the mountain range called the Albtrauf northwestwards, thus collecting almost 2500 mete…

E9 Von der Donau an den Bodensee

Cycling route in Tuttlingen, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany

The final stage to Lindau is quite long at 155 km, but the fantastic panoramas over Lake Constance and the postcard landscape of Allgäu make up for it. It starts immediately with an ascent; right from the starting point in Tuttlingen, we climb up to the viewpoint mountain Witthoh. Then it goes flat…
