Saarland Cycle Route

A scenic loop around Germany’s Saarland that brushes the French and Luxembourg borders. It’s a proper tour: mostly paved and well signed (look for “Saarland-Radweg”), with lots of quiet farm roads and forest tracks, plus a few gravel stretches. A trekking or endurance road bike with sturdy tires is ideal.

Expect rolling terrain and steady little climbs that add up over the full loop. Highlights stack up too: the famous Saarschleife viewpoint near Mettlach, the UNESCO‑listed Völklinger Hütte, the nature-rich Bliesgau Biosphere Reserve, lakes like Bostalsee and Losheim am See, and peaceful sections by the Saar and its side valleys. Towns like Saarbrücken and Saarlouis make easy resupply and overnight stops.

It’s a circle, so start anywhere and ride in either direction. Trains across the region make hop‑on/hop‑off simple if you’re splitting it into stages. Looking for mellow miles? Stick to the river valleys. Want more nature? The upland forest tracks deliver. Short bits on busier roads pop up here and there, but most of the route stays quiet.

Best from spring to autumn, with plenty of cafés, beer gardens, and viewpoints along the way.
