Overview

About this collection

Ride the Austrian stretch of EuroVelo 6 along the Danube, from the German border near Passau through Linz and the Wachau wine valley to Vienna and on toward Bratislava. It’s one of Europe’s classic riverside routes: mostly flat, well signposted, and largely on smooth asphalt cycleways with a few links on quiet roads or firm gravel.

Expect easy navigation, plenty of bike-friendly stops, and big scenery—vineyards, castles like Melk Abbey, and long river views. Great for touring bikes, e-bikes, and families. You can split the ride into short sections between towns using frequent trains along the valley.

Surfaces are overwhelmingly paved, with occasional gravel or cobbles in historic centers. Waytypes mix dedicated cycle paths, calm village streets, and brief stretches on busier roads. Summer gets lively; spring and fall are mellow.

If you’re planning multi-day, popular stages are Passau–Linz, Linz–Grein, Grein–Melk, Melk–Krems (Wachau), Krems–Tulln, Tulln–Vienna, and Vienna–Bratislava. Bring a lock for café stops, some cash for small ferries, and enjoy the tailwinds when they show up.
