EuroVelo 6: Hungary

Follow the Danube across Hungary on EuroVelo 6. This collection strings together the country’s classic riverside ride, from the Austrian border past historic towns to the southern plains. Expect mostly flat days on smooth asphalt cycleways and quiet roads, with short stretches of gravel, cobbles, and tracks in parks and village outskirts. A few links use busier roads—nothing wild, but be alert.

Route highlights include Győr’s old town, the fortresses around Komárom, Esztergom’s basilica, the scenic Danube Bend near Visegrád, and Budapest’s riverfront paths. South of the capital the river opens up with long, easy miles toward Baja and Mohács.

It’s easy to split the ride into bite-size stages thanks to frequent towns, food stops, and riverside rest spots. Standard touring tires are perfect; after rain, the unpaved bits can get soft. Signage is generally good but varies, so a GPS map helps. Ride it spring to autumn for mellow weather and big Danube views.
