EuroVelo 5 (Via Romea Francigena) – France, Part 3

A collection of 15 cycling routes.

Overview

About this collection

Part 3 of EuroVelo 5 in France follows the Via Romea Francigena on a mostly paved mix of dedicated cycleways and quiet backroads, with occasional tracks and paths. Expect smooth asphalt most of the time, a few cobbles and short loose‑gravel patches, and brief links on busier roads through towns.

The terrain rolls, with some proper climbs sprinkled in, so it adds up over a full day. Rideable in either direction. Waymarking is generally EV5/Via Francigena; a GPS track helps in urban areas and around any detours.

Scenery shifts between canal-side greenways, historic centers, and open countryside (plus the odd vineyard), with plenty of towns for coffee, water, and supplies. Rail connections pop up regularly, handy if you need to trim a stage.

Any solid touring or gravel bike will do; wider tires make the cobbles and short gravel easier. Lights are useful for city sections and the occasional busier link. All in, a friendly slice of EV5 that keeps the riding straightforward and fun while connecting classic French landscapes and towns.
