Overview

About this collection

The Dutch leg of EuroRoute R1 carries you across the country between Belgium and Germany on an easy, mostly flat ride. It’s roughly 390 km with minimal climbing, so you can spin all day without burning out.

Expect long stretches of dedicated cycleways, quiet village streets, and classic canal and dike paths. Surfaces are mostly asphalt and paving stones with the odd bit of gravel or cobbles, and only brief busy-road sections. It’s friendly for touring bikes and loaded setups.

Plan on 4–7 days depending on pace. You’ll pass plenty of shops, bakeries, and places to stay, so logistics are simple. Navigation is straightforward too—follow the Dutch cycle network nodes or a GPS track and you’re golden.

Best time to ride? Spring and summer for mild temps and big skies; it’s rideable year-round, but bring a wind layer. If you need to bail or skip ahead, trains and local transport make it easy to break the route into chunks.

A relaxed, scenic traverse with peak Netherlands vibes: water, windmills, tidy towns, and top-tier cycling infrastructure.
