Mississippi River Trail

A collection of 119 cycling routes.
OverviewAbout this collection

Ride the spine of the U.S. along the Mississippi, from Minnesota’s headwaters to the Gulf of Mexico. This collection pulls together the Mississippi River Trail segments into one north–south adventure. Expect mostly paved roads with signed cycleways and levee paths, plus the odd gravel stretch. River towns come often, so food, water, and overnights are easy to plan. Highlights: bluff country in MN/WI, big river bridges, and city miles through the Twin Cities, St. Louis, Memphis, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans. Traffic varies—quiet backroads, some busy highway, and dedicated paths—so pick sections that match your comfort. Spring and fall are prime; summers get hot and humid down south, winters are sharp up north, and high water can cause detours. You can thru-ride or tackle it state by state. Mind bridge options and occasional ferries, and check closures before you go. The Great River Road often parallels the route, handy for services and alternates. Big river vibes all the way to the delta.
