Saxon Uplands Cycle Route

A collection of 11 cycling routes.

Overview

About this collection

A long-distance ride through the low mountain ranges of Saxony in eastern Germany. Expect plenty of climbing and rolling ridgelines, then speedy descents into forested valleys and small towns. Most of the route is paved, but you’ll hit some gravel, cobbles, and farm tracks too. It strings together quiet roads for the most part, with a few short busy links and dedicated cycleways near towns. The full loop comes in around 400 km with roughly 7,000 m of ascent, so bring low gears and comfy tires. Any solid touring or gravel setup will do; e-bikes are fine as well. There’s no fixed start or finish—just pick a section that suits your time and legs. It’s easy to break into stages and resupply often. Best from late spring to autumn; weather can change fast in the hills. Navigation is straightforward with the GPX/OSM data and may be signed in places. You’ll get a great mix of forests, ridges, quaint villages, and river valleys without ever straying far from civilization.
