Maritime Alps - Mercantour Road Cycling Loop

The Grand Tour Alpi Marittime-Mercantour

Maritime Alps - Mercantour Road Cycling Loop

A collection of 8 cycling routes.

Overview

About this collection

A big, cross‑border loop linking France’s Mercantour and Italy’s Alpi Marittime. Think long climbs, balcony roads, and quiet stone villages between the Riviera and Piedmont. It’s mostly smooth tarmac with a few short rough or cobbled bits—road bike friendly (28 mm tires feel nice).

This is a serious mountain ride: well over 300 km with massive elevation gain (around 19,000 m). You’ll stack high passes all day—often including classics like Bonette, Lombarde, Cayolle, Turini, and Tenda depending on your exact line. Start anywhere (Nice, Isola 2000, Limone Piemonte, Cuneo) and ride in either direction.

Traffic swings from peaceful high cols to busier valley approaches and resort areas. Start early and bring lights for tunnels and cuttings. Resupply is easy in towns but sparse on the climbs—top up whenever you can.

Best season: late June to September when the big passes are open. Weather flips fast at altitude, so pack layers and a decent rain shell. Low gears and solid brakes make the day a lot happier.

Perfect for experienced riders chasing an Alpine challenge with huge views to the Med and across Piedmont. Do it as a 3–5 day tour, or go big and try it in one push.
