St Francis Way: Rimini–La Verna MTB

A collection of 10 cycling routes.

Overview

About this collection

From the Adriatic at Rimini to the Sanctuary of La Verna in the Tuscan Apennines, this MTB line follows the Cammino di San Francesco with a real mix of terrain and big mountain vibes. Expect serious elevation (over 4,000 m of climbing) and a blend of quiet country roads, farm tracks, and paths, with short links on busier roads. Surfaces swing from asphalt to plenty of gravel and dirt, so go with an MTB or a tough gravel bike and low gears.

You’ll roll out from the coastal plain into hill country, passing through classic Romagna and Tuscany landscapes—vineyards, chestnut woods, ridgelines, and views for days—before reaching the cliff-top monastery at La Verna, a key site in St Francis’ life.

Best ridden spring to autumn; after rain, the unpaved sections can get messy. Carry enough water and snacks between towns, and lights for tunnels or shaded forest. It splits nicely into 2–3 stages if you want a more relaxed trip. Easy train access to Rimini makes logistics simple; the finish at La Verna is quieter and remote.

If you’re after a coastal-to-mountains journey with proper climbing and mixed surfaces, this one’s a gem.
