About this collection

Big alpine loop linking Germany’s Watzmann and Austria’s Hochkönig. Expect long climbs, huge views, and a mix of gravel, forest roads, and a few rough paths. The route circles the Berchtesgaden Alps—skirting Königssee and rolling beneath the Hochkönig massif—mostly on quiet tracks with short paved connectors.

Start anywhere on the loop: Berchtesgaden, Bischofshofen, or Saalfelden all work. It’s a punchy ride with serious elevation gain; strong riders might squeeze it into a mega day, but most will love it over 2–3 days with hut stops. Bring low gearing, solid brakes, and chunky tires (wide gravel or a proper MTB) for the loose and steep bits.

Best ridden June–October when the higher forest roads are snow-free. Highlights: Watzmann (2713 m) towering above Königssee in Germany, and Hochkönig (2941 m), the highest summit of the Berchtesgaden Alps, on the Austrian side. Quiet valleys, pine forests, and ridge views make this one a classic.
