About this collection

0

Linking the River Somme to the Marne in northern France, this collection follows canals, farm roads, and trails across Picardy into Champagne. It’s a mixed-surface ride: plenty of paths and gravel, some quiet lanes, and the odd busy stretch. A gravel or touring bike with 35–45 mm tires is ideal.

Expect mostly flat to gently rolling terrain along waterways, open fields, and small towns. You’ll brush past WWI remembrance country near the Somme and, closer to the Marne, vineyards and chalky hills. Surfaces range from asphalt to loose gravel and compacted ground; lights and a bell help on shared towpaths.

Good to know:

  • Surface mix is roughly half paved and half unpaved, with significant gravel sections.
  • Dedicated cycleways are limited, so navigation matters.
  • Family-friendly sections run along canals; take care where the route uses roads.

Ride it in either direction, take your time for bakery stops and viewpoints, and pack for mixed weather—this is classic French countryside riding.
