Empire State Trail: NYC–Kingston

A collection of 13 cycling routes.

Overview

About this collection

Roll from New York City up the Hudson Valley to historic Kingston on one of New York’s signature bike routes. It strings together long, mostly paved greenways and rail trails with a few short on‑road links.

Expect smooth asphalt for most of the way, plus some gravel stretches—nothing wild, but wider tires make it comfier. You’ll get river views, leafy corridors, and plenty of towns for coffee, snacks, and water. A standout moment is cruising over the Walkway Over the Hudson, then continuing on relaxed rail trails toward New Paltz and Kingston.

The route is largely traffic‑free, though there are brief busy connectors near urban areas. It works for a big day out or a mellow overnighter, with easy train options along the corridor if you need to cut it short. Bring lights for the occasional shaded section and mind posted rules in shared pedestrian areas.

In short: classic Hudson Valley riding—scenic, mostly paved, and very bike‑friendly with a touch of gravel to keep it interesting.
